About This Project

During the catastrophic 2025 Los Angeles wildfires, this Malibu residence built with cold-formed steel framing emerged unscathed while surrounding properties were devastated. Malibu, known for its high fire risk due to Santa Ana winds and brush-covered hillsides, has seen numerous destructive fires over the decades. This Wheeler Steel project demonstrates why architects and homeowners in fire-prone areas are increasingly choosing CFS construction. The steel framing withstood the extreme heat without igniting, buckling, or failing. Close-up photography shows the intact bolt connections and steel members that maintained their structural integrity throughout the fire event. This home stands as living proof that building material choices can mean the difference between total loss and complete survival in wildfire scenarios.
